RIT Student Hall for Exploration Development Tour

On March 21, 2024, The Rochester Plant Engineers hosted the RIT Student Hall for Exploration Development tour. Our tour guides Dave Harris and Bill Ernst did a wonderful job explaining how the building infrastructure was designed and functions then taking us to all the secret areas where the action happens. Approximately 20 people attended the tour and all were impressed with one item, the color-coded electrical conduit, where each color represented a particular voltage eliminating any confusion. You can see an example in the photos, it is fantastic, something that I could see in the near future becoming code. Some of the other observations on the tour is the use of the building, most of us “mature and wiser” folks stated “college was never like this for me, if it was…. I would have never left.” If you have the chance to wander around RIT, go check this building out. The evening rounded out the with dinner, drinks and conversation at Jerimiah’s.

The Board of Directors would like to thank Dave Harris and Bill Ernst for taking the time to give us the tour and a big thank you to Diane Kleckly for helping to arrange the tour.

The SHED (Student Hall for Exploration and Development) will be a place where the makers, doers, and thinkers of RIT come together to explore through experiential learning and develop their dreams and ideas into reality. This project includes a 130,000 SF new building and 86,000 SF of renovations to the campus library building. The building contains a wide variety of spaces, uses and needs ranging from a performance theater, CNC shop, dance hall, 3D printing, music studio, sensitive archival storage, maker spaces, classrooms and support spaces. Clear glass is used extensively for visibility of multiple spaces from all locations. The evening rounded out the with dinner at Jerimiah’s.
